Most searches are closer to home than you’d think

When someone searches for a business like yours, there’s a good chance they’re not typing your name — they’re searching for what you do, near them. An estimated 46% of all search queries have local intent, and BrightLocal — the Brighton-based local search research firm — has spent years tracking exactly what happens next.

77%
of UK consumers say they’ve used the internet to find a local business in the last 12 months, according to BrightLocal’s UK-specific research.

The free listing most businesses half-finish

A Google Business Profile takes minutes to claim and costs nothing, yet it’s frequently left half-finished: no opening hours, a handful of old photos, nothing posted in months. According to BrightLocal, only around 35% of small businesses have a fully completed profile — but those that do are 70% more likely to attract a visit, and 50% more likely to be considered for a purchase.

35%
is roughly how many small businesses have a fully completed Google Business Profile. That’s a lot of free visibility left on the table for a listing that costs nothing to finish properly. (BrightLocal)

Why this matters more than it looks

BrightLocal’s UK-specific research backs this up from the consumer side: 72% of UK consumers now trust online reviews as much as a personal recommendation from a friend. Local search isn’t a nice-to-have channel sitting alongside the “real” marketing — for most small, local businesses, it’s the main way new customers find them at all.

Local SEO isn’t about ranking for everything. It’s about making sure that when someone nearby searches for exactly what you do, you’re the business that shows up first — not buried behind a competitor with a completed profile and a handful of recent reviews.

Where most businesses actually lose ground

In practice, the businesses that win local search aren’t necessarily the biggest — they’re the ones who’ve bothered to keep the basics current. A consistent name, address and phone number across every listing. Recent photos. A handful of genuine reviews, responded to. None of it is complicated, but it’s the sort of task that’s easy to do once and then forget about for two years, by which point a more attentive competitor has quietly taken the top spot.
